School children in Sweden are learning how to survive in challenging conditions as it is part of their school curriculum.

For instance, during physical education class, kids are taught how to rescue themselves if they end up in a freezing cold lake, and each student experiences it firsthand.

Dressed in their usual school attire with backpacks on, the children take turns jumping into the lake.

After a quick submersion, everyone tests their resilience and tries to stay in the water, which is approximately one degree Celsius, for at least one minute.

Girl: "I know what's coming, but I'm excited and, at the same time, terrified of the cold. But I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen".

Those participating in this course, conducted during physical education class, are around 10 to 11 years old.

Andreas Isaksson, Teacher: "The curriculum in Sweden includes courses to teach students how to save their lives in different situations. You don't necessarily have to jump into the freezing cold water; you can learn theoretically, but this is how we chose to do it".

Such courses have been introduced in Nordic countries due to the high number of accidents on ice. Furthermore, students are instructed to always carry small ice picks, which they thrust into the ice above the water and then use to pull themselves to the shore.

The practical part is optional. But in schools where such exercises are organized, almost all students show a lot of courage and enroll.

Girl: "It was fun, and now I know how to get out of the water if I happen to fall".

In the end, the daring ones are rewarded with a hearty lunch to regain their strength.
