Cristina Mihai, orthodontic specialist: "Most of the time, when the teeth come in, they appear crowded and rotated because there is a discrepancy between the development of the jawbone and the size of the teeth. On a profile X-ray, measurements are taken by orthodontists, which show us how the jawbones will grow".
If the jawbones are too small, there are devices that help their development. These are effective in childhood. An incorrect bite can also be well corrected during adolescence.
Once growth has ended, adults see the effects of this incorrect bite.
Ioana Dragoman, orthodontic specialist: "Many adults associate complications with living with an incorrect bite. You have to address the complications—periodontal disease, abrasions, instability, joint pain—one by one and resolve them step by step".
At 6 years old, a child needs their first visit to the orthodontist to check their bite. If this has been missed, there is still time for a bite evaluation until adolescence.
