Why is it important to have leisure time?
A fulfilling leisure time is very important for our mental welfare.
Sparing up to two hours of leisure time each day can make a significant contribution to reducing stress and improving our overall health.
We usually work about 8 hours a day, sometimes more. However, the tendency to overwork and be constantly connected to emails, group chats or work apps incessantly eats up our free time, even when we are not at work and should be resting. It is no coincidence that the older generations look up to Gen Z when even in moments when we should be "off", we dig into our phones or laptops.
The stress caused by lack of free time contributes to overwork, which, in its turn, can cause adverse health consequences. Working 55 hours or more a week increases the risk of stroke, heart disease, depression and unwanted weight gain according to some studies.
It is important to remember that work responsibilities are not the only demands on our time. Apart from work, we also have to manage household chores, our relationships and various other meetings or commitments. This extra time is not set aside for resting; it is filled up with different forms of work.
Not getting enough rest worsens stress and reduces productivity. If we start the workday with a peaceful mind, we can demonstrate higher quality results bringing more satisfaction with our overall work productivity.
