During a panic attack or sudden anxiety, the human body reacts instantly, which may cause unenjoyable symptoms, one of which is shortness of breath. No matter if you have had an isolated case of panic attack or have been diagnosed with panic disorder, feeling short of breath can be unsettling and even frightening.

Breathing can be a good indicator of the internal state of an individual. It is quite normal when experiencing stress, panic or anxiety that their breathing is affected. Various studies have suggest that changes in breathing can trigger a panic attack, increase anxiety levels, or intensify a panic attack that has already started.

Shortness of breath is related to the protective response of the body to fight or flight. By trying to absorb more oxygen, our body tries to protect itself.

Anxiety can both cause shortness of breath and make it worse. Symptoms of anxiety can be the cause of feeling short of breath. The reverse sequence is also observed. Shortness of breath can increase your restlessness and anxiety. Especially with panic attacks, shortness of breath can appear before the panic attack itself, but it can also intensify during one.

The good news is that panic attacks can be controlled through treatment. There are many alternatives for this, but the approach to each patient is strictly individual. Of course, the treatment should be coordinated with your treating physician who can accurately identify the most suitable method to deal with the problem.
