3 Reasons not to Compare Your Mental Health to the Psychological Problems of Others

It is inherent to human nature to compare oneself to others, whether positive or negative. Positive comparisons boost self-esteem and make people feel better about the circumstances in their life; it refers to Gen Z and social media to a high degree.

People compare themselves to others in all spheres of life. Mental health is no exception. Below, we will list three situations when it is not good to compare your mental health to that of others, simply because there are no common points, only adverse consequences.

There are global celebrities with psychological disorders:

There are globally famous people like Mariah Carey who suffer from bipolar disorder. Revelations of celebrities about mental health issues can be a double-edged sword, but it is a good example in situations like this when we want to avoid comparison. Most people have not achieved as much in their lives as a star like Mariah Carey, and that is sufficient argument that things are not always what they may seem.

You might thing you are lucky but to no avail:

As sad as it is to admit, many people have often joked about how "lucky" they would be if they just had anorexia to lose weight. This type of thinking is undoubtedly dangerous.

Faster recovery of others is also a myth:

Support groups, whether online or in-person, can be fantastic sources of help and comfort for those struggling with mental disorders – it is an indisputable fact. Yet consider that they will be a little useful in the progress of someone else...
