The communication paradox of the era. Many young people from Generation Z are afraid to answer the phone or call someone
In the communication era, more and more people avoid talking to each other. 26% of young people from Generation Z confess that they are afraid to answer the phone or make a call.
On the other hand, over half of employees prefer to communicate in writing with their bosses. We are therefore talking about what specialists call telephobia, a psychological reaction generated by social anxiety, shyness or fear of direct interaction.

We spoke with several young people from Bucharest, and they all admitted that they prefer to communicate in writing rather than answer the phone. A behavior that may seem paradoxical in the age of technology, when it seems like we have our mobile phones glued to our hands.
"I usually send messages. It's easier; I'm used to it. I'm not used to talking on the phone, and I don't like it".
"I find it easier through messaging".
"I generally communicate through messages; I feel disturbed when I am called and I don't want to bother others".
"It's easier with messaging, it's more comfortable, yes. It comes naturally now; I don't know".
According to a study conducted by a telecommunications company in the UK, 26% of young people aged between 18 and 25 fear direct communication, and 57% do not answer calls from their parents.
"I wouldn't blame just social media; I would blame parents too"
Psychologists say that during a written conversation, people are more vocal, which may seem contradictory. However, they have the courage and relaxation to say things they think because time is on their side. They are able to formulate a response without needing to be spontaneous.
Diana Miron: "This indicates anxiety, as practically we don't have the courage or desire to interact directly and improvise. When we respond to phone calls or engage in face-to-face communication, we often improvise, meaning we respond without having a premeditated answer. Perhaps this is the fear among these young individuals, the fear of being caught off guard".
Changes in people's communication styles are also reflected in the workplace. According to a study, more than half of employees feel anxious when they have to talk on the phone with their boss, 33% don't answer, fearing they won't know the answer to a question right away, and 15% avoid a call, fearing they will get stuck during the speech.
Others believe they will create a bad impression on the other person, or they don't answer because they don't like how their voice sounds on the phone.
Adrian Dan, sociolog: "We are moving towards creating generations that are increasingly unable to communicate with meaning, and here I wouldn't just blame social media, I would blame parents too".
Communication specialists believe that written messages can also generate conflicts in interpersonal relationships because words can be interpreted and misconstrued.
