From this year onwards, students who purchase their bachelor's thesis instead of writing it themselves may face fines of up to 200,000 lei and could be expelled. The same penalties apply to those who sell such theses.

Platforms that offer such services risk being shut down after the faculty reports them and verifies the scientific work.

A young man from Cluj, who is currently pursuing a master's degree, revealed that the easiest way to find a thesis seller is through acquaintances.

Student: "From one acquaintance to another. A recommendation from a person who does it, a person who needs it, and there's an intermediary there because he helped me before or I know he deals with such things. Also, there are Facebook groups where you can find people who do these works for a fee".

The price varies depending on the client's requirements.

Student: "If we talk about humanities, the prices start from around 1000-1300, and they can go up depending on the faculty or topic or the grade you want to achieve. In the engineering field, the prices are very high, starting from 2,500-3,000 and above".

Student: "You give them a sum of money upfront, and they start writing".

We contacted a person who claims to write theses on different topics. For 1,600 lei, they even offered us a report attesting that the work is not plagiarized. Another person accepted payment in installments.

Theses consultant: "Payment is made in installments by chapters. First, they send parts of the chapter in PDF format, and after you make the payment for that chapter, they send the whole thing".

The law now imposes fines of up to 200,000 lei for both buyers and sellers of bachelor's theses. The faculty must file a report with the police and provide evidence that the student cheated.

Nicolae Urs, vice-dean: "When we evaluate the bachelor's thesis, we are very careful to find out if the student has worked on the presented work. We have access to a platform that allows us to check the works for plagiarism".

Daniel David, rector of Babeș-Bolyai University: "We and others have reported numerous websites to the ministry. Subsequently, the ministry has identified them. Now we have the legal leverage to block such activities".

Plagiarized works also lead to the expulsion of the student.
