First aid maneuvers can make the difference between life and death. In Alba County, hundreds of students have learned how to intervene in crisis situations and now have tested their skills in a competition.

They handled all situations well, whether it was a simple wound or cardiac arrest.

Over 300 students tested their extremely important medical knowledge in emergency situations.

If the situations had been real, the victims would have successfully passed the critical moments. The young people managed remarkably well.

Daria, student: "One had a head injury and a swollen and bruised knee from a fall, and the other was a child who ate a sandwich in the park, and we had to perform the Heimlich maneuver. These weren't very difficult".

The students worked in teams. Collaboration is important, as is the speed of reaction and keeping emotions under control.

Flavia, student: "It is very important, first of all, to act as quickly as possible. We have to pay attention to everything happening around us".

Denisa, student: "Our case involved a pregnant woman who fell at a pedestrian crossing, lost consciousness, but was breathing. A woman at the crosswalk ran to help her, did not look out for traffic, and was hit by a car, injuring her knee".

Anamaria, student: "I managed to keep myself under control and helped the person who needed assistance instead of panicking".

The competition is organized by the Romanian Red Cross.

Adrian Dușa, director of the Romanian Red Cross in Alba: "The courses are more than necessary. They can be useful in society, at school, at home – we are all exposed to risks, and knowing first aid measures is essential for a normal and developed society".

The number of students interested in such competitions has doubled in recent years. The first edition of the competition was organized in 1962.
