After 12 years of absence, Romania’s national gymnastics team is returning to the global elite. Our girls have qualified for the team finals and will also be represented by three athletes in the individual apparatus finals.

Years ago, Romania was setting the tone in world gymnastics, but now, unfortunately, we’re at the back of the pack.

With the eighth best qualifying score, the Romanian women’s gymnastics team will compete in the final against the world's greatest gymnastics powers: United States, Italy, Brazil, China, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Sabrina Voinea’s scores were decisive. The young gymnast has also qualified for two apparatus finals: floor exercise and beam, where she has a chance for a medal.

Sabrina Voinea: "Since I was little, I’ve wanted to reach the Olympics and achieve a very good result. I’m going, I’m fighting with the best athletes and I want to beat them. I will push myself as much as I can to make myself proud and my mom especially, and everyone back home... the fans and all of Romania".

Camelia Voinea, Sabrina’s mother, is a former gymnast who won a silver medal at the Olympics 36 years ago. She is now her daughter’s coach, and the hopes of Romanian gymnastics rest on her shoulders.

The last Olympic gymnastics final Romania competed in was in 2012

Camelia Voinea, Sabrina’s mother: "It’s very good that we’re back in the spotlight and we’ll fight again for Romanian gymnastics, to bring it back, step by step, to where it was. I hope it goes well, I hope that in tomorrow's competition... the girls will have a very, very good performance".

Sabrina Voinea, Ana Bărbosu, Amalia Ghigoarță, Lilia Cosman and Andreea Preda will compete on July 30th in the team final. Ana Bărbosu and Amalia Ghigoarță have also qualified for the individual all-around final, while Ana Bărbosu has also made it to the floor exercise final. Nadia Comăneci has cheered them on from the stands.

The last Olympic final in which the Romanian team competed was in 2012, in London. This is where our girls won the bronze medal.

Mihai Covaliu, President of the Romanian Olympic Committee: "They have already achieved a primary objective, which was to be among the top 8. We hope our athletes will surpass themselves and bring back even a little of the glory that gymnastics has brought to Romania for so many years".
