Romanians will be able to seek compensation from the authorities in court if they get sick due to polluted air, according to a European directive.
Citizens who develop conditions, such as asthma or lung cancer, due to air quality will be able to sue local authorities that fail to take measures to combat pollution.

The European directive sets strict limits for harmful particles. In Romania, half of the network that should monitor air quality is not functioning. Only 82 out of 181 stations are active.
The European Commission has initiated the sanctioning procedure against the Romanian state for not fulfilling this obligation. According to the European Environment Agency, Romania ranks 8th in the European Union in deaths caused by pollution. Around 30,000 people lose their lives annually due to this cause.
