Inexperienced drivers may be prohibited from driving powerful cars. This is provided by a new draft law recently submitted to the Senate by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR).

Thus, individuals aged up to 21, as well as those who have held a driver's license for less than a year, will no longer be able to drive cars that develop more than 100 horsepower.

The law targets holders of category B licenses and also provides a maximum limit for electric vehicles - at most 75 kW.

Additionally, the new law brings changes to the practical training during driving school. The minimum number of hours of theoretical training will be 25, and practical training will be 45, compared to the current 30.

The legislative proposal also stipulates that the police have the obligation to warn drivers about the presence of radars on roads.

"With the congestion of traffic, especially in urban areas, there is a need to establish new rules, as well as to strengthen civilized relationships between traffic police representatives and participants. In this context, we believe it is essential to allocate a dedicated section to prevention, addressing both the approach of the traffic police towards participants and the implementation of additional safety measures for those vulnerable to accidents in the specific urban traffic environment (pedestrians, children). In 2021, Romania remained at the forefront in the European Union in terms of the death rate resulting from road accidents. Last but not least, measures are proposed in order to tighten the training of candidates obtaining a driver's license and to professionalize their examination, marking an initial effort to elevate the standards associated with obtaining the license and creating a safer environment on public roads", the memorandum concludes.
