Not Exactly "Friends for Sex". What Does to Be in "situationship" Mean?
Ever since the dawn of time, casual relationships have been existing. As a result, we seem to be constantly inventing new terms to describe these situations First, there was the "prey call." Next: "friends with benefits". And now for Gen Z are: "situation." So, what exactly does the term mean?
"'Situations' can be defined as a romantic relationship that lacks commitment and the norms and expectations associated with it," says Jess Carbino, PhD, who has extensive experience with some of the biggest dating apps like Tinder.
"Situational relationship is a general term that includes any romantic relationship that is undefined or unestablished," says Devin Simon, relationship expert at Tinder.
Such outcomes in relationships certainly offer both pros and cons. These relationships are an opportunity for growing up for those who want to explore dating and relationships in general. Furher, they give opportunity for flexibility and non-commitment - you have the freedom to make decisions and explore your passions. There is intimacy without commitment, too.
The cons should not be ignored. There might be no consistency and stable support. "In a situation that is already very undefined and without clear expectations, it can be hard to feel like sharing those more challenging parts of your life or asking for the kind of support you need," explains Simon again.
It is possible to have conflicts with the other person if different feelings manifested by one of the two, tipping the scales towards a serious relationship.
