New Modern Relationships. What Does It Mean to Be a "Swinger"
Do you remember the episode of That ‘70s Show where Kitty and Red unexpectedly find themselves at a swingers game party (or more accurately, a "wife swapping party")? Although the 70s were a time of the past, being sexually involved with other couples continues to be trendy up to now - the times of Gen Z.
Swinging is a form of ethical non-monogamy and an alternative relationship style that is getting more popular.
"Swinging is usually (though not exclusively) a joint activity involving an established couple who likes to change their sex lives by exploring sex with others in a safe environment," says Dr. Gloria Brame, sex therapist and certified sexologist.
Principally, swinging is a lifestyle where people—often couples—have sexual relationships, such as casual relationships, group sex, or even partner-swapping, with multiple people. Swingers can play with their romantic partner or partner(s) or alone.
"There are many different reasons why couples and singles choose to engage in this style of relationship, "but the majority of people pursue it to explore sexuality in one way or another," explains Brilyn Andrejewski, another renowned psychologist.
"For some, "the buzz of swinging is seeing their partners enjoying the pleasure with new partners," sums up Brame.
We can definitely conclude that for many swingers, the lifestyle revolves around attending events like sex parties to engage with others of their kind.
