The Wild Carpathians Initiative is a community that protects the wildlife of the Carpathians. Its activists created a grassroots social movement that anyone can join. According to them, all citizens should have the right to decide what happens to Poland's forests.
"We have blocked the Ministry of Climate and Environment to show the people who should care about nature that their actions are insufficient and even destructive. Currently only 1% of Poland's area is designated to National Parks, and no new ones have been created for the last 30 years, despite promises made," reads the Instagram post of one of the protesters.
"Activists fighting to protect old-growth forests from logging are being treated brutally, locked up in detention centres and slandered with false accusations to get the public to side with a draconian government with only money and profit in its interests. We saw this during the eviction of Nora in section 219a in August 2022 and during the eviction of a blockade in the planned Turnicki National Park in July this year," the post further reads.
The protest had the character of peaceful civil disobedience, according to Gazeta Wyborcza. Twenty people took part in the protest. They all stuck their hands to large and heavy barrels, preventing entry and exit from the Ministry of Climate. The Police were called to the site of the blockade. The last activists in front of the entrance were taken away around 9 a.m. Some of them were transported to police stations.
