Climate activists have put Lufthansa Group at risk by staging protests at airports in Germany. They briefly shut down several flights in July costing the company a lot of money and leaving hundreds of passengers disgruntled.

It all started in 2022, when climate activists invaded airports in Berlin and Munich. It was then when activists started gluing themselves to tarmac and blocking take-offs by standing on runways. At the time, however, it was said that these initiatives did not affect many flights.

Another major protest took place on 13 July and was organised by the Last Generation group. The activists cut through the fences of Hamburg and Dusseldorf airports to stick themselves to the tarmac and obstruct even more flights. Thei intention was to draw international attention to the climate crisis.

What are Lufthansa's claims?

It turns out that among the affected airlines is Lufthansa, which now demands compensation for losses incurred as a result of the Last Generation activists blocking the runways.

At the moment there is no information on the value of the damage caused by the protests. However, aviation expert Gerald Wissel, in an interview with the Rheinische Post, estimates that damages would likely be in the millions of euros.

Lufthansa intends to file claims on behalf of all airlines in the group, which also includes Eurowings, Austrian and Swiss Airlines, and Brussel Airlines. Due to Last Generation protests, 55 flights were cancelled at Eurowings alone.

Düsseldorf Airport has also announced its intention to pursue its own claims against Last Generation, DPA reports.
