Indian airline IndiGo is prioritising the safety of female travellers with a new initiative. The airline now offers passengers the option to choose the gender of the person seated next to them during their journey.

For many women, travelling on public transport often involves unpleasant encounters with fellow passengers. Indecent comments or unwanted touching occur on trains, buses, and planes more frequently than one might like to admit. Consequently, some women choose to pay for an extra ticket rather than sit next to a male stranger. These decisions are often driven by past traumatic experiences or a desire for psychological comfort.

Indian airline reaches out to women

IndiGo is pioneering a new solution to significantly enhance the comfort and security of female travellers on its aircraft. Starting from August 2024, the airline will allow female passengers to choose the gender of the person seated next to them. This policy aims to improve the travel experience for women, especially those travelling alone or with children.

IndiGo, India’s largest low-cost airline, operates 2,000 domestic and international flights daily. Recognising the need for safety and mental comfort, the airline ensures that female passengers can sit next to other women.

Notably, this option is not available to male passengers, who can view seat availability but not the gender of their neighbours. This measure is designed to protect women travelling alone.

A representative of the airline IndiGo said in a statement to CNN: "IndiGo is proud to announce the introduction of a new feature that aims to make the travel experience more comfortable for our female passengers. This has been introduced based on market research and is currently in pilot mode, aligning with our #GirlPower ethos."

"We are committed to providing an unparalleled travel experience for all our passengers, and this new feature is just one of the many steps we are taking towards achieving that goal," the airline added.

Indian transport companies committed to women's safety

The airline IndiGo is the first to allow women to check the gender of their travelling companions, but this solution is already being used in India for trains and buses. Female passengers in India can book tickets to travel with other women on public transport, which increases their sense of security.
