27 pro-Palestinian Demonstrators Were Arrested before the Start of the Met Gala
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations broke out near the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York before the start of one of the most outstanding events in the fashion world, the Met Gala.
The protesters tried to disrupt the event, which is traditionally organized with the participation of dozens of celebrities and demanded an end to the months-long war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
According to NBC News, the protesters gathered in the so-called "Day of Rage" and marched from Hunter College through Central Park to try to thwart the event. A large number of protesters were near the venue of the gala, despite efforts by the police to block their way.
Some of the demonstrators had smoke bombs and torches. At least 27 were arrested.
Amid the raging protests in the country, many stars, in bold and extravagant outfits, paraded at one of the most prestigious fashion events in the world. This year's gala theme was "The Garden of Time" based on the short story of the same name by author James Ballard.
The main purpose of the event is to raise funds for the fashion department of the prestigious museum in New York. A place at one of the tables for the dinner costs 75 thousand dollars and the booking of an entire table - 350 thousand dollars.
This protest came at a time when pro-Palestinian student protests across the country had been going on. In the past three weeks, more than 2 400 students and professors had been arrested at 51 universities. The participants insisted taht US universities should turn down any investment related to Israel because of the war with Hamas in Gaza, which had killed more than 34,000 Palestinians.
