We already know that "Barbie", the latest film directed by Greta Gerwig, will be a very different representation of the popular doll. Her story is to be not only modern and feminist, but also inclusive. The characters of Barbie and Ken are to be played by multiple people, with transgender actress Gari Nef getting one of the roles. This means that we may see a transgender Barbie on screen.

Now fans have another theory that could cause quite a bit of controversy. They wonder if, by chance, Barbie will be a lesbian in Gerwig’s movie. They have "gathered" a lot of evidence and some of it is really convincing.

Although we know that the film will be a modern Barbie story, the plot is still being kept secret. However, we have already been given a few trailers for the movie and read some interviews with the actors. It is the clues scattered in these footage and texts that have led fans to question the character's sexual identity. They think she might be a lesbian.

According to internet users the trailers suggest that Barbie is in fact not interested in Ken. She avoids kissing him and doesn't let him know what she is doing or planning to do. Ken certainly plays a part in her life but, according to fans, he is not her love interest.

However, they believe that Barbie's love is Gloria, played by America Ferrera. They claim that the chemistry between them is evident and point to a scene in the trailer where the characters exchange long, romantic glances.

This theory was fuelled by an interview Margot Robbie recently gave. While speaking with Time, she admitted that she had to fight to get one of her scenes to appear in "Barbie". Mattel's boss wanted it removed, so Robbie and Gerwig played it off in front of him so it would stay in the film. Fans suspect it might suggest the kiss between Gloria and Barbie.

If Gerwig really wanted to modernise the story, a lesbian Barbie would have been ideal for the film. However, it appears that the main character will rather be bisexual, as in one of the newer trailers Ken claims that Barbie is his girlfriend. Of course, this doesn't mean that the protagonist won't enter into another romantic relationship with some girlfriend.

Whether the new "Barbie" will really turn the world of doll fans upside down, we will find out on 21 July. In any case, we have to admit that the film with Robbie and Gosling appears and promises to be a lot of fun.
