For a total of 29 days between April 25 and July 14, the peak tourist season, day-trippers will need to purchase this ticket to enter the old town between 8:30 AM and 4 PM local time.

The website for purchasing tickets was launched on January 16 at https://cda.ve.it/en/, available in both English and Italian.

However, numerous exemptions are provided, especially for children under 14, students or members of law enforcement.

In this program, which was approved last year, there are no restrictions on the number of visitors.

This project, announced in September, aims primarily to discourage day visitors who contribute to the overcrowding of the city, renowned worldwide for its artworks, bridges and canals, and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1987.

"Venice is the first city in the world to implement this system, which can serve as an example for other fragile cities (...) that need protection", said Mayor Luigi Brugnaro in November when the municipality disclosed the implementation details of this fee.

"It's not a revolution but the first step of a system that regulates visitor access on a certain day", explained Brugnaro, stating that the goal is the "quality of life in the city".

In mid-September, Venice was not included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in danger.

However, UNESCO experts recommended in late July the classification of Venice as "in danger", a jewel threatened by excessive tourism and global warming, due to "insufficient" measures taken in Italy to combat the deterioration of this site.

Approximately 3.2 million tourists spent the night in the historic center of Venice in 2022, according to official data, a figure that does not include the thousands of visitors who go there only for a day.
