The surgical intervention consisted of reshaping the genital organs to change the sex of a patient from male to female, as reported by Arad Online.
However, the surgery in Arad was just the last in a series of surgical interventions on the man who has now become a woman. The removal of the testicles and the reshaping of the cartilage known as the Adam's apple were performed in other medical units in Romania.
Before reaching the actual reshaping surgery, the patient underwent a series of hormonal treatments to help reduce excessive hairiness or voice thinning.
The surgery, done on request and at a certain cost, lasted over five hours and involved reshaping the penile gland to form a neoclitoris. The penile and scrotal tissue was used to construct the larger and smaller labia, with the repositioning of the urethra.
The patient also underwent breast implant surgery, also performed in Arad
"This intervention became possible only after a series of very important steps were taken, materialized through multidisciplinary consultations, including endocrinologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, urologists. Before the external genital reshaping surgery, the patient underwent several surgical and medical interventions. The intervention we performed was, practically, another stage in the transformation process and was carried out for the first time in Arad. The surgery went smoothly", said Dr. Zsolt Gyori.
Additionally, the patient opted for breast implants, which were also done in Arad. The patient was discharged on the morning of November 6th after five days of hospitalization.
The age of the patient remains confidential at their request. Generally, this type of surgery is requested towards the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood, but it should be noted that there is no upper age limit for sex reassignment.
The bureaucratic process for sex reassignment in civil status documents is extremely complicated
However, sex reassignment is only recognized once it is reflected in both the surgical procedures and the civil status documents.
After the surgeries, the patient will need to approach the relevant institutions to change their civil status documents by altering their name and gender, with the presentation of medical documents.
Before submitting the application to the court, individuals seeking changes to gender-related mentions in civil status documents must go through the following stages: obtaining a diagnosis – a psychiatrist specialist must certify the diagnosis of gender identity disorder; visiting an endocrinologist and starting hormonal treatment; surgical interventions – transgender individuals (who, through these medical procedures, change their status from transgender to transsexual) generally undergo certain surgical interventions for the removal/reconstruction of breasts and genital organs.
