Historic milestone in Romania. Women earn more than men for the first time. What is the current level of the average gross salary?
For the first time in history, in Romania, the average gross salary earned by women has surpassed the average salary of men by 200 lei, according to the Minister of Labor.
Moreover, the number of women in leadership positions has also increased significantly.

Adriana Duna is 54 years old and manages three restaurants in Alba Iulia and Aiud. She also oversees a canned food production unit and a sweets and pastries laboratory. She embarked on her journey 30 years ago with businesses in the construction industry, faced bankruptcy, but reinvented herself.
Adriana Duna, CEO: "If you love what you do, nothing is difficult, as long as you have enthusiasm and passion. I believe that all things fall into place. The biggest challenge was starting from scratch three times. It's important how you rise when you fall, and managing to push your limits again, I think that's the key to success".
What is the average salary for women?
The number of women like Adriana is increasing. Furthermore, the average salary for women has reached 6,026 lei and has exceeded, for the first time, the average salary for men, which was 5,804 lei. Employers say that women are more organized than men and more empathetic.
Employee: "I think it's a bit low by 200 lei. They are multifunctional, more inspired, they have something extra compared to masculine abilities".
Employee: "Everyone receives what they deserve. Why not? Women can receive a higher salary than men".
Employee: "It also depends on the knowledge each person has. I can't be against a woman who earns more than me if she deserves it".
At the same time, the number of women in leadership positions has significantly increased, according to data provided by the Labor Inspection.
In 2014, there were approximately 180,000 women in such positions, in 2019 the number exceeded 200,000, and this year there are almost 250,000. Compared to 2019, the number of individual labor contracts for women has also increased.
Ana Călugăru - manager of a recruitment platform: "Multinational companies play a very important role in this regard, as they have started to come and consolidate fairly strong inclusion policies, borrowed from their headquarters abroad, where gender equality is a very strong topic".
Last year, the European Parliament adopted a legislative package requiring companies to take action if the gender pay gap exceeds 5%.
