As children, we often see the world through rose-coloured glasses. However, when we grow up and look back at some of our favorite childhood stories, toys, and pastimes, we can discover something darker and more disturbing.

Let's take the movies many children like as an example. At first glance, they seem harmless and fun, but upon closer analysis we can reveal hidden messages or images that have been the subject of much criticism. For example, many old cartoons contain stereotypes or symbols that are unacceptable in today's society.

Children's toys are no exception. Many popular toys of the past have been the cause of outrage due to toxic materials in their construction or dangerous parts that could endanger children's health. Over time, public awareness and product safety laws have evolved, but memories of the past remain.

The stories of heroism and adventure we used to tell and listen to often contained dark elements, too. Classic fairy tales like those by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen often end with hard lessons and dramatic scenes that today's parents might find too harsh for children's ears. These stories are a product of their time, when childhood had a different social and cultural context.

Consider popular nursery rhymes that are innocent only on the surface. Many of them have roots in historical events, wars or social struggles that have been disguised as children's tunes to be handed down from generation to generation.

As today's GenZ have grown up in an age where the moral and social aspects of cultural products are actively debated and re-evaluated, they face the task of reassessing and reframing these memories in a new, more conscious context. It includes understanding how certain ideas have reflected and been communicated over the years and how these perceptions should change in the future.
