The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control warns that cases of sexually transmitted infections, especially among young people, have started to increase alarmingly.

According to European experts, the majority of infections occur in heterosexual individuals with new or multiple partners.

Syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia are the diseases that have recorded a worrying increase in Europe - as stated in the latest report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

SYPHILIS: +57.8% 2022 vs 2021

The situation is similar in Romania - except that syphilis is the condition that has spread the most. Arad, Brăila and Neamț are the counties where this disease has the highest incidence.

Young man: "Having multiple sexual partners is again a risk factor nowadays".

According to statistics, the number of men diagnosed with syphilis was twice that of women - and the majority of those infected were heterosexual individuals. Most cases of gonorrhea were detected in Iași, Cluj and Bacău.

Sexual education in schools is a major issue for Romania

The first two counties also appear on the list of reported cases of chlamydia infection. The age group 20 - 24 years is the most affected by sexually transmitted diseases.

Adrian Băican, dermatovenerologist: "Without a doubt, young people are the most numerous with these conditions. You have to imagine that we are not only talking about syphilis, for example, there are many other sexually transmitted diseases, such as viral hepatitis, such as AIDS, chlamydia infection, which is a major problem because it is frequently asymptomatic".

Young man: "Some people are infected, they transmit the virus without knowing they suffer from such a disease".

Correct use of condoms is essential in combating sexually transmitted infections, say experts.

Sexual education is also important, but in Romania - as well as in Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Italy - it is not mandatory in schools and is mainly handled by non-governmental organizations.

George Berar, project coordinator: "Every time we visited schools, there was interaction with the students, which they requested. While teachers could sometimes be stricter, we were fortunate to find considerable cooperation from the high schools".

Considering the increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommends testing, especially for those with new or multiple partners.
