Theatres have started offering performances for the young audience. These range from modern adaptations of classical literature to current topics. Excelsior Theatre attempts to attract young people with plays that reflect their lives.
The recent premiere was the play "Pterodactyls". A comedy about people struggling with their own identities, according to director Radu Iacoban. The show played to a full house.
Radu Iacoban, director: "It's a cliché, a dysfunctional family with parents who didn't raise their children very well, with children who are left with some traumas, but it's a comedy. For this type of show, we want a younger and more engaged audience".
Ioana Niculae and Dan Pughineanu, actors: "First of all, it's a contemporary text; I think that would be a good reason to bring young people to the theatre, to see that the shows, the theatre, are now much more accessible. It's not something outdated and dusty. Lately, some very different shows have been staged in terms of style; there's a great diversity in the repertoire".
Vlad Cristache, theatre director: "We tried to produce shows based on contemporary texts, shows with attitude, with personality, that don't condescend to young people and consider them as discussion partners about the society we live in".
This fresh air in the theatre arts sector comes with the trend of young adult literature, which has seen significant growth. Last year, one of Romania's largest online bookstores recorded a 30% increase in this segment.
In the age of social media, young people have created communities dedicated to literature. This gave rise to the "booktok" trend.
Alina, content creator on TikTok: "I created a page because I saw a few pages like this and they inspired me. I observed that connections built on a shared passion for reading can develop. I was eager to share my reading experiences. I believe it's effortless for young individuals to connect with others within a similar age range, dealing with common issues. Various topics are discussed, ranging from abuse to trauma".
Among the best-selling books for young people are "The War That Saved My Life", "Povestiri de pe Calea Moșilor" ("Stories from Calea Moșilor") and "Never Never".
