Pupils are complaining about low temperatures in schools. In some classrooms they do not exceed 15 degrees Celsius. The Dead Statutes Association decided to intervene.

Although winter is still a long way off, the temperature in some schools leaves much to be desired. An anonymous complaint has been received by the Dead Statutes Association (Polish: Umarłe Statuty). Students complain about the lack of heating in the buildings. They also report that in the summer temperatures in classrooms are high and in the autumn it is most often cold during the lessons.

The principal does nothing

In an anonymous message to the Dead Statutes Association, a student wrote: "What can be done about the low temperature in schools? Unfortunately this has been a 'tradition' for many years. Hot weather = very high temperature, but when it is cold - it can be colder in school than outside. The management does nothing about it."

Further on in the letter, the student wrote: "Today in some classrooms the temperature was around 16-17 degrees, while in the toilets it was 14 degrees. Many people from my school are already sick. I personally am lying down with a fever. Some teachers allow people to sit in jackets during lessons, some do not. (...) The management knows about the problem and does nothing about it."

Umarłe Statuty to the rescue

The Dead Statutes Association activists suggested to an anonymous pupil that she bring a thermometer to school. It is thanks to this advice it is now widely known that it is really cold inside - between 14 and 17 degrees Celsius. The pressure on the management was half-successful: as the Dead Statutes Association wrote, the school authorities decided to shorten lessons, but only for one day. This means that during the rest of the week, pupils and teachers are forced to stay in cold classrooms.

The Dead Statutes Association representatives reminds that the Regulation of the Minister of National Education and Sport mentions appropriate temperatures in schools. The passage reads that "the temperature in rooms intended for lessons should be at least 18°C. If it is not possible to ensure such a temperature, the school principal is obliged to suspend classes for a specified period of time".

The issue of too low a temperature in a classroom can be reported to the sanitary inspectorate, the school superintendent's office, the State Labour Inspectorate or the authority in charge of the school. So to avoid illnesses resulting from too low temperatures in schools, it is a good idea to act on your own as well.
