Sellers and waiters will be required to check the IDs of young people buying alcohol, tobacco or energy drinks to ensure they are of legal age, according to a draft amendment to the Romanian law aimed at preventing consumption by minors.
Store sellers and waitstaff in establishments will be obligated to ask for the IDs of young people buying alcohol, tobacco or energy drinks, according to a draft amendment to the law to prevent the consumption of these products by minors.

Failure to comply with these provisions will result in hefty fines ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 lei, as specified in the text of the draft.

"In order to verify that buyers and consumers requesting the sale or serving of alcoholic beverages, energy drinks and/or products regulated by the provisions of art. 2 of Law no. 201/2016 regarding the establishment of conditions for the manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco products and related products and amending Law no. 349/2002 for preventing and combating the effects of tobacco product consumption, as subsequently amended and supplemented, have reached the age of 18, the staff of public establishments and sellers in commercial units are obligated to request the identification documents of consumers", states the draft amendment sent to the Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies.
The penalties for failing to meet these obligations are substantial.
"In case of failure to fulfill the obligation provided in paragraph (1), the staff of public establishments and sellers in commercial units may be fined from 10,000 lei to 30,000 lei", according to the draft amendment of the law.
The project has been endorsed by the Health and Family Committee, as well as the Legal, Discipline and Immunities Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, and is signed by the chairpersons of the two committees, respectively Nelu Tătaru (former PNL Minister of Health) and Laura Vicol.
