Breakthrough. Romanian students studying abroad will now receive cheaper train tickets. Where do pupils have access to free transportation
Both state and private school pupils will benefit from free public transportation, such as metro, train and maritime transport, as announced by the Minister of Education.
For the first time, pupils from Ilfov will have free access to the metro. The discount for train tickets for students has also increased from 50% to 90%.

Starting this year, pupils enrolled in both public and private schools following foreign programs will benefit from free public transportation. For the first time, pupils residing in Ilfov, but studying in Bucharest will be able to use the metro for free, according to a government decision regarding school transportation.
Ligia Deca, Minister of Education: "Pupils will benefit from free public transport services, including local, metropolitan and county public transport, road, maritime, metro, as well as railway services for all train categories, second class, throughout the school year. Pupils will enjoy free access to public transportation within their county and inter-county transportation from their place of residence to the locality where they attend school. In situations where there is no available public transport service and no transportation provided by educational institutions or local authorities, fixed amounts will be provided instead".
For the metro, the free service will be provided based on a monthly subscription throughout the school year, with reimbursement by the Ministry of Transport. As for trains, the existing free service remains unchanged, encompassing all routes and trains in Romania, on the condition that pupils travel in second class.
Furthermore, there has been an increase to 90% in the discount for train passes and tickets for students, compared to the previous 50% discount.
The discount for public transportation, including the metro, remains at 90%. Additionally, the age limit for students to be eligible for transportation benefits has been raised to 30 years. Additionally, for the first time, discounts on domestic railway transport will be provided to Romanian students enrolled at foreign universities. They will benefit from a 50% discount on tickets.
Students who have lost one or both parents or come from foster care centers will be eligible for free train transportation throughout the academic year.
