A student in Rome who responded to a job announcement at a supermarket refused to work at the store when she learned what salary she would receive: 500 euros per month for a full-time job.

When contacted by the store manager, the girl explained that she did not expect the salary to be so low and that a student cannot manage with less than 1,000 euros because she has to pay rent and university fees.

"I study and support myself: 500 euros per month for 40 hours a week is a mockery today, no one should work under these conditions", said Aurora to the Italian press.

The young woman is studying Education Sciences at the University of Roma Tre. She decided to look for a job on online recruitment platforms and came across an announcement from a major supermarket chain.

"We are looking for candidates, even without experience, with excellent organizational skills, proactivity and a desire for teamwork. The offer is addressed to people who can start a six-month training period with a salary ranging from 500 to 900 euros per month", the internship announcement for a sales assistant position read.

Aurora was then called by the store manager, who gave her more details about how the company works and what role she would have if she decided to start the internship: a reimbursement of expenses of 500 euros per month for 40 hours of work per week, but also, the possibility of professional growth.

The manager also told her that she could be hired part-time for 700 euros a month on a three-year contract.

"If we consider you capable, there is the possibility of hiring you as a salesperson", the store manager explained to the student.

The store manager also clarified that she would not take into account the years of experience the young student has in HoReCa: three and a half years at a fast-food restaurant, which she left because she was poorly paid.

The girl rejected the offer and ultimately took a job at a restaurant in Trastevere, where she says she is paid "decently".

"Not everyone has the luxury to turn down a job, but it cannot be considered normal to work under these conditions", expressed the young woman.
