Andrzej Fonfara versus a non-binary bison
Boxer Andrzej Fonfara accompanied the video with a highly charged, millennial-style commentary. He included phrases such as "Brainwashing through children's stories," "What the f*** is this!," and "Forgive me, my little daughter, for showing you this," concluding with the triumphant statement, "I’ve already blocked this cartoon in my home." Fonfara's Instagram story quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter).
This is not the first time a Ridley Jones character has stirred controversy on social media. The initial wave of outrage occurred in 2023 when the episode featuring the non-binary character first premiered on Netflix. Nevertheless, Fonfara’s story reignited the debate, prompting many emotional reactions online.
Popular YouTuber Sergiusz Górski, known as ‘Nitrozyniak,’ weighed in with the comment: "Kids at this age should be learning colours, not about non-binary issues and other deviations." His remark garnered over 4,000 likes.
YouTuber Michalina Kolba also responded, sarcastically writing, "Forgive me, my little daughter, for showing you this. I’ll play the scene again just to record a video and swear at it." Kolba’s comment hinted at the unlikely timing of Fonfara's post, suggesting it was improbable that the cartoon scene coincidentally appeared just as he was recording the screen.
Ideology and attitudes towards LGBTQ+ minorities
It is important to highlight that those who harbour resentment towards LGBTQ+ minorities often hold deeply ideological views on the matter, typically shaped by religious interpretations or political manipulation aimed at creating divisive ‘bogeymen’ to mobilise voters. The existence of non-binary individuals is a factual reality. A neutral stance simply acknowledges that they exist and, like everyone else, have the right to be themselves and be represented in popular culture, including in children's cartoons. This is illustrated by the reaction of Fonfara's child, who, while exposed to the so-called ‘scandalous’ content, merely watches passively, fidgeting slightly on the sofa.
On the other hand, the insistence that non-binary and other minority groups should be invisible in public spaces, or perhaps not exist at all, reflects a deeply ideologised and emotionally charged perspective. This raises critical questions that are rarely directed at Polish homophobes or transphobes: What exactly do they propose? To what extent should LGBTQ+ minorities ‘disappear’ to satisfy their vision of society?
