Pixar's first non-binary character. Will they be censored in Poland?
The first explicitly non-binary character will appear in a Pixar animated movie. As expected, Disney is already being criticised for its so-called "woke" content, with some parents announcing they will stop watching the studio's films.
After Disney's "Don't Say Gay" affair, in which Pixar employees accused the studio of censoring and throwing out storylines related to the LGBTQ+ community, something has definitely changed for the better.

The first sign of the change was "Strange World" animated movie which featured homosexual teenagers. A little earlier Pixar gave us a same-sex kiss in "Buzz Lightyear" movie. Now the time has come for the representation of non-binary people. The upcoming film titled "Elemental" is set to feature the first non-binary character in Pixar animation.
Non-binary character in Pixar’s "Elemental"
"Elemental" is the latest animation from Disney-Pixar. As announced on Twitter by the actor who voiced one of the film's characters, the story features the first distinctly non-binary protagonist.
Kai Ava Hauser, who uses the pronouns they/them, is to voice the character from the water element family called "Lake Ripple". It is them who is to represent non-binary people for the first time in Pixar films.
"BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! I got to play Pixar's first nonbinary character! Meet Lake! I voice Lake in the new movie #Elemental! I'm seeing it in theaters tonight with my friends, so you can catch it in theaters too if you wanna see them," Kai wrote on Twitter.
What is the film about?
"Elemental" will be released in Polish cinemas on 14 July. In the film, we follow the lives of characters who reflect the four elements: fire, water, earth and air. A pair of contrasting heroes, Ember and Wade together will try to save the City of Elements from annihilation. The film is set to explore themes of cultural differences and xenophobia.
"Elemental" has already premiered in the US and, of course, was met with opposition. Some have suggested that parents will now no longer take their children to Disney and Pixar films at all for fear of "woke" content.
"Disney continues to flop at the box office. They've hurt their brand so much that even if they ever make a movie with no controversial elements (ELEMENTAL has a non-binary character named Lake), parents won't take their kids to see it," someone wrote on Twitter.
It is not yet known how the creators decided to show the non-binary nature of the characters in "Elemental". If they have decided to use neutratives, we can expect that they will not be translated in the Polish version.
This already happened in the case of the animation "Baymax". The dialogue was changed in the scene with the buying of sanitary pads, in which a transgender man appeared. It can therefore be expected that the non-binarity of the characters in "Elemental" may unfortunately not be expressed here either.
