It's an unusual spring, with daily temperature records. On April 15th, the southern part of the country heated up like in July.

The thermometers indicated 33 degrees in the shade, but people felt as if it were 35 degrees. The wave of warm air has some benefits.

On Sunday, April 14th, Romania recorded the lowest electricity consumption since measurements have been taken. In mid-April, people sought shade as in summer. In front of public fountains, passers-by stopped to fill their bottles with water or to wash their hands and face.

That's how it was on Monday in Bucharest.

Reporter: Did you take out your summer clothes? How did you find the April temperature?

Woman: "Too hot. I remember last year I went to church for Easter at night and it was snowing. And now... Can you imagine".

At 4:00 PM, in Bucharest, the thermometer showed 35 degrees Celsius. It was an unusually hot day for April. Comparing it to last year, according to ANM, the maximum temperature recorded on April 15th, 2023, was 12 degrees. 23 degrees less than on Monday, April 15th, 2024.

Caught off guard, many have already taken a tour of the stores selling air conditioning units. Orders are already pouring in by the hundreds.

Stelian Ciorbă, commercial director of a specialty store: "People have started to get into the classic panic mode: when the heat comes we buy air conditioners. It’s been more crowded than in previous years. It's already at the level of June-July last year. Somewhere around 3,000 lei is the average shopping basket".

One thing is certain until everyone installs air conditioning units. The heat has resulted in historically low electricity consumption in Romania. On Sunday, between 12:00 and 3:00 PM, the lowest figures were recorded. This is actually the lowest value since 2007, when the operator Transelectrica began presenting the data. Experts suggest that with high temperatures, consumers meet their own electricity needs. Additionally, the reduced need for heating homes has resulted in decreased consumption of coal and gas.

Andrei Corlan, general commissioner of the National Environmental Guard: "With the arrival of the hot season, dispersion improves and then we can breathe less polluted air. We have noticed the positive evolution of air quality".

Problems disappear and we can say that, at least from the perspective of residential heating, we have 27% fewer problems in terms of air quality in Bucharest.

Areas of the country where the weather have significantly cooled down

From Tuesday, April 16th, it has significantly cooled down in the north and west of the country.

Carmen Moisa, meteorologist Banat-Crișana Meteorological Center: "A cooler air mass has penetrated. This was felt in the western part of the country starting from April 16th. On Wednesday, the weather cooled down significantly. We had maximum temperatures around 10-15 degrees".

The same happened in Bucharest and throughout the south of the country. From Thursday onwards, we did not have more than 18 - 19 degrees.
