"At the opening of the water leisure activities season on the Buzău Valley, the PaddleX guides and a few friends took advantage of the high temperatures at the end of March to explore Lake Siriu. Finding a large number of plastic waste floating on the surface of the lake, the kayaking enthusiasts decided to organize an activity aimed at cleaning the shores of debris and drawing attention to the massive pollution of the county's waters.
A team of 5 enthusiasts and specialists got on SUP boards and paddled to the proposed cleaning area. In 3 hours, they filled 30 sacks of 320 liters with PET bottles, footwear, bottles, light bulbs and other floating waste. Their efforts were joined by the Romanian Waters Administration and the Siriu Town Hall, which helped lift the waste bags through the sanitation operator. Even though they managed to collect approximately 350 kilograms of waste as a result of their mobilization, the water surface and its shores are far from being cleaned", the organizer of the action transmitted, according to Agerpres.
According to the initiative group, plastic pollution of water bodies is an increasingly pressing issue, affecting both the health of fauna and flora, and that of the residents, considering the direct impact on economic activities in the area.
"We're raising the alarm; the issue of microplastics is pressing, and a significant portion of the PET bottles collected from the water had disintegrated. We found many bizarre things in the water, from baby bottles, syringes, to light bulbs. Most of them were beer and soft drink PET bottles, and I hope that the packaging guarantee system will solve at least half of the water pollution problem", stated the president of CLOSER, Auraş Mihaiu.
The northern area of Buzău County, an integral part of the UNESCO Geopark "Ţinutul Buzăului", attracts tourists annually, with camping, kayaking tours, cycling tours, hiking, SUP or rafting being organized on the Siriu Reservoir.
