The military has become so appealing to young Swedes that officials are compelled to turn away candidates eager to be part of the National Guard, a force that complements the country's professional army.

In 2020, there were approximately 20,000 members, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine triggered a spectacular increase in enrollments.
Moreover, the war initiated by Vladimir Putin prompted Sweden to abandon its policy of military non-alignment and seek NATO membership.
Now, Sweden's integration into NATO awaits only Hungary's approval.
