Wisconsin teacher fired from school. All because of a Miley Cyrus song
Not everyone likes the work of Miley Cyrus and one American school even went so far as to ban one of her songs from being played or sung there. Now the teacher who decided to protest and defended the song was fired. What caused so much controversy?
Miley Cyrus has long been a supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. This can be seen not only from the various happenings at her concerts, to just mention last yearâs gay proposal, but also from her songs. One of them is called "Rainbowland".

In March 2023 one American school banned young people from singing the artist's song. And the teacher who opposed the decision has been fired recently. What part of Mileyâs song caused so much controversy?
Teacher fired over Miley Cyrus song
A few months ago students at a primary school in Wisconsin, USA, wanted to sing a Miley Cyrus song as part of their spring concert. Unfortunately the board decided that the song was too controversial and banned the students from performing. They argued that "Rainbowland" would be violating a district policy which prohibited "controversial issues in the classroom."
At the time Melissa Tempel - the teacher who chose the song for the spring celebration - told CBS News that she was concerned about the school's decision. Mrs Tempel wondered what message the establishment was thereby sending to LGBTQ+ students.
As The Guardian reports, the teacher has now been fired. Members of the local education board voted unanimously to terminate her contract. According to them, the woman violated the facility's policy because "she deliberately brought negative attention to the school district because she disagreed with the decision as opposed to following protocol and procedure". Tempel's attorneys maintained that the teacher was simply exercising her right to free speech.
Miley Cyrus songs inappropriate for children?
Wondering what part of the song caused so much controversy? We also are. "Rainbowland" is a track from the 2017 album "Younger Now", featuring Miley singing with Dolly Parton about acceptance, tolerance and inclusivity. You can see a snippet and read an excerpt of this "controversial" trackâs lyrics below.
"Wouldn't it be nice to live in paradise / Where we're free to be exactly who we are / Let's all dig down deep inside / Brush the judgment and fear aside / Make wrong things right / And end the fight," sing Cyrus and Parton.
Melissa Tempel, on the other hand, is about to start a fight. As the Guardian writes, she intends to sue the school for violating the First Amendment of the US Constitution. And what about Miley Cyrus herself? Her foundation has already made a donation to an organisation that provides LGBTQ+ books to young people.
