How to Spot Fake News
Fake news is becoming an increasingly noticeable global phenomenon, and social media makes it easier to spread false information.
Because of their lack of experience, Gen Zers are the people who are most often misled. Such articles can have many different sources, and one of the main motivations is to attract clicks, which means more income for the site. Usually there is a dose of truth in them, around which the journalist's imagination runs wild. It relies on provocative titles that make the reader not only read the article, but also believe that the information is true.
Every time you surf the internet, you are bombarded with pictures, articles, links and videos trying to tell their story. Unfortunately, not all of these stories are true. Sometimes the goal is to get you to click on another story or ad on their own site, other times to upset people for political reasons. These stories spread quickly and the result is … fake news.
Here are some tips on how to tell the real from the fake news:
1. Check the source
Check out the website where the story came from. Does it look real? Is the text well written? Are there various other stories or is this just one story? Fake news websites often use addresses that sound like real newspapers, but they don't have many real stories on other topics. If you are not sure, click on the About page and look for a clear description of the organization.
2. Watch out for fake photos
Many fake news stories use images that are photoshopped or taken from an unrelated site. Sometimes, if you just look closely at an image, you can see if it has been altered.
3. Check if the story is available elsewhere
See if the story you are reading is on other news sites you know and trust. If you find it on many other sites, it is probably not fake (although there are some exceptions), since many major news organizations try to check their sources before publishing a story.
4. Look for other signs
There are other techniques that fake news uses. These include the use of ALL CAPS and lots of ads that pop up when you click on a link. Besides, think about how the story makes you feel.
If you find news that you know is fake, the most important advice is not to share it. Searching for information on a particular topic through Internet search engines can lead you to untrustworthy sites. Be careful!
