It is difficult to give a precise definition of these two demographic groups because there is no consensus on their characteristics and time range. But putting them in a larger category called "young people" is also unfeasible, because in fact they are quite different.

The oldest Millennials are now in their 40s. This generation witnessed the boom in technology, including the emergence of the Internet, mobile phones, laptops, iPhones and iPods, as well as the launch of social media platforms. The oldest members of Generation Z have already graduated from college. People of this generation were born after the emergence of the Internet and social networks. They're growing up in times of global division, social unrest, a global pandemic, a market crash... and lots of TikTok.

Generation Z – children of the technological world.

Millennials were born into a world where neither social networks nor computer technology existed. They witnessed the emergence and evolution of this type of technology, while Gen Z were born and raised immersed in this technology. Therefore, they are experts in using this technology, but at the same time, their generation is characterized by a lack of concentration because smartphones and social media trends have a strong impact on their minds.

Gen Z are more realists while Millennials are more optimistic about life. Gen Z, on the other hand, are more realists mainly due to the fact that they grew up in more troubled and uncertain times. Gen Z live longer with their parents than expected. Nowadays skyrocketing rents and inflation have forced many Gen Zers to carry on living with their parents even after graduation from university. As a result, many of them currently have problems with self-confidence and finding their identity. Compared to them Millennials were raised to be more independent because the society and economic situation at the time allowed it. With a different sense of fashion, Generation Z prefers retro and vintage outfits. Through their style, they pay homage to the fashion trends that Millennials grew up with. As they become more concerned about the environmental issues on the planet, they are also looking for more sustainable clothing. They are interested in materials the clothes are made from and the working conditions under which they are produced.

Higher expectations

The daily life of Millennials goes around dial-up Internet and the use of phones that can only make calls and send text messages. Unlike them, Gen Z were born into a world teeming with new technology. The technological gadgets once considered inspiring and innovative by Millennials have been taken for granted by Generation Z. As a result, Gen Z have higher expectations and therefore higher demands. Gen Z value their privacy while Millennials grew up in a time when digital technology was just emerging, they explored early social media platforms, making their thoughts, opinions and almost every aspect of their lives more public.

Gen Z, on the other hand, value privacy and they are more selective about the information they share online in view of their safety and security. Digital learning - Generation Z believe that you can get a good education not only at university. They are looking for educational alternatives such as online courses, YouTube tutorials or job offering vocational training. Identity crisis - as Millennials were brought up in greater stability, they know what they want out of life. They graduate from university, settle down, buy a house, marry their high school sweethearts and have children. This goal of stability seems out of reach for many Gen Z. Raised in digital dominance, social unrest and a global pandemic, Gen Z are socially confused. They tend to go through many phases and many of them are not clear about what their future could or should look like. Citizens of the world -Millennials are considered to be the first global generation because they witness global events in real time. However, Generation Z now interact with their global peers with much more easily. As the world becomes increasingly digitized and borders disappear, Generation Z will eventually see themselves as citizens of the world. If we try to wrap up: Generation Y are more independent and less distracted. Gen Z, despite being distracted and confused, are much more socially aware with a stronger sense of justice, security and privacy. It is up to you to assess the characteristics of which generation you bear.
