Activists break into car showroom to drill holes in hundreds of tyres
Activists from the Tyre Extinguishers group reported that they broke into a car dealership in Exeter, UK. They punctured the tyres on more than 60 cars. This time, however, it wasn't just about the climate crisis.
Climate activists are increasingly targeting the rich. In July, the Futuro Vegetal group decided to spray-paint a millionaire's yacht. At a similar time, other activists decided to deflate 50-SUVs.
Now, similar incidents occurred in the UK. The Guardian reports that activists broke into a car dealership to wreak some havoc. But the idea behind damaging at least 60 cars was different this time.
Activists puncture tyres at a car showroom
As The Guardian reports, the activists broke into the Vertu Jaguar showroom in Exeter on the morning of Monday 7 August. Going from vehicle to vehicle, they used an electric drill to make holes in all four tyres of each car standing there.
They damaged more than 60 vehicles that day. A group called the Tyre Extinguishers claimed responsibility for the sabotage and reported that the action was carried out on their behalf by an independent activist cell. Footage of the incident appeared on their Twitter profile.
Why did activists puncture tyres at a car dealership?
Activists have evidently made it their goal to puncture car tyres. In Lisbon, they have already punctured several hundred tyres on off-road vehicles since June. In Berlin, they have deflated 50 SUVs. The Guardian reports that thousands of cars have already been attacked around the world in exclusive city districts.
Previously, the activists mainly wanted to draw attention to the problems of the high carbon dioxide emissions that off-road vehicles are responsible for. They also don't like the fact that car parks are being built in cities instead of cycle paths. This time, however, the Tyre Extinguishers wanted to send a slightly different message.
In an email, the activists said that their action was in response to a tragedy that occurred at Study Prep school in Wimbledon. In early July, a Land Rover crashed through a school fence, killing two eight-year-olds and injuring 16 others.
"This act of retaliation is intended as a peaceful and non-violent demonstration to draw attention to the presence of grossly inappropriate private vehicles in our towns and cities. Tyre Extinguishers firmly believes that their action is a necessary escalation to try and stop these vehicles from wrecking further lives and continuing to push the worsening climate crisis off the cliff edge," - they wrote in a statement.
The activists also point out that they are "not responsible for individual actions, but simply publicise them". Devon and Cornwall police are aware of criminal damage that occurred at a Jaguar dealership. "Inquires continue", reads the statement as quoted by The Guardian.
