Warsaw has launched a significant initiative aimed at saving the lives of individuals in emotional crisis. Green suicide prevention signs displaying helpline numbers for immediate psychological support have been installed on the Poniatowski Bridge.

The Warsaw Crisis Intervention Centre has introduced an innovative solution to support individuals in emotional crises. Six green suicide prevention signs have been installed on the Poniatowski Bridge, one of the capital’s busiest locations, bearing the message, "Don’t give up on life!" The signs prominently display two vital phone numbers: 511 200 200 and 112, which could prove life-saving.

The initiative is designed to catch the attention of those in mental distress and guide them towards the help they need. This project is funded by the 2024 civic budget.

Helplines that can save lives

The City of Warsaw has launched the 24-hour helpline 511 200 200 for adults struggling with suicidal thoughts. This service, available around the clock, connects callers with experienced psychologists, therapists, and social workers who provide free emotional support, psychiatric and legal consultations, and, if required, temporary shelter.

Additionally, 112 is the primary emergency number across the European Union, accessible from landlines and mobile phones in life-threatening situations.

Warsaw Crisis Intervention Centre

People facing emotional crises can also access a wide range of services the Warsaw Crisis Intervention Centre provides. The centre operates three local support points across the capital:

  • In Śródmieście, at Plac Dąbrowskiego 7, near the Świętokrzyska subway station.
  • In Mokotów, at 4 Belgijska Street, where a domestic violence counselling centre is also housed.
  • In Ursynów, at ul. 6 Sierpnia 1/5, where assistance is available 24 hours a day.

The centre offers support to adults experiencing emotional crises stemming from situations such as the loss of a loved one, relationship difficulties, or work-related problems.

Stolen sign

Despite the positive intentions of the project, one of the suicide prevention signs on the Poniatowski Bridge has already been stolen, sparking outrage among residents. The incident, reported by Miejski Reporter, underscores the importance of these signs in offering help to those in need.
