The Confederation presidential candidate Sławomir Mentzen has made a striking personal revelation. The MP and businessman admitted that he had "always felt something was wrong" with him. A thorough diagnosis has since confirmed his suspicions.

Awareness of mental health and neurodiversity is steadily growing within society. Seeking therapy or consulting a psychologist or psychiatrist has become commonplace. For many, caring for their mental well-being is as routine as visiting the dentist for a toothache. Yet, public figures who disclose personal mental health challenges often face mixed reactions. While some offer support, others voice criticism.

Is Sławomir Mentzen on the autism spectrum?

Sławomir Mentzen, known for his controversial stance among both supporters and critics, appears largely unaffected by public opinion. In an unexpected revelation during an interview with Bogdan Rymanowski, the Confederation politician shared: "I have always felt that something was wrong with me. It used to be called Asperger's syndrome and now is known as autism spectrum disorder."

A late diagnosis

Mentzen disclosed that his diagnosis came later in life, at the age of 30. He admitted he had always felt different and exhibited behaviours not seen in his friends or peers. Reflecting on this, he said: "I've always been a little bit different, maybe that’s why it comes across as a mask. Things my colleagues do with ease have always felt like insurmountable challenges for me."

The MP also revealed that he has struggled to make friends in new social settings. He first suspected he might have autism during a conversation with Przemysław Wipler at the Confederation headquarters, which led to his realisation: "It became clear from that conversation that what I’m dealing with is unmistakably this condition."

Sławomir Mentzen also revealed that he struggles with interpreting emotions and engaging in conversations with individuals or groups. "I have trouble reading people's emotions. I don’t always know what a friend is thinking. (...) In my daily life, I sometimes exhibit difficult behaviour, failing to pick up on certain cues and emotions. (...) When I enter a lift and someone greets me, I panic a little," he admitted.

However, Mentzen highlighted the positive aspects of autism, which he embraces. "I can concentrate intensely on a specific task. People like me have a tremendous ability to become specialists. Once focused, they can achieve mastery. I am able to make decisions quickly, and I’m more determined, able to stay focused on a goal," he said proudly.
