Scientists believe that artists have a sharper mind, which is why, in their later years, they lead a more active life compared to most people.
Brain stimulation encourages the development of synapses and improves blood circulation. Individuals who do not consistently train their minds are more susceptible to risks in old age.
In the study, tests conducted on 1,570 people over 40 years old showed that those who learned to play an instrument performed significantly better in terms of memory, reasoning and speed of thought.
All instrumentalists who participated in the study scored significantly higher than people who do not play any instrument. The piano seems to have the greatest benefits on the brain.
"We believe that being a musician could be a way to leverage the agility and resilience of the brain, known as cognitive reserve. Our findings indicate that promoting music education would be a valuable public health initiative. Similarly, encouraging older adults to return to music at an older age. This could proactively reduce their risk of dementia and promote brain health", said the study's author, Professor Anne Corbett, according to The Sun.
Previous studies have shown that children's IQs are boosted by musical instruments. Additionally, these instruments improve concentration skills.
Adults who sing or have sung throughout their lives perform better in language tests and in speed of thought.
Also, singing in a band or choir contributes to socialization, which is another way to reduce the risk of dementia.
