Over recent years, the number of teenagers and young people from Gen Z who become aware of their sexual preferences at an earlier stage of their development has increased a lot. This brings with it another question – how to tell your parents about your sexual orientation.

At an early age, these topics are usually taboo and communication with the family is always more difficult, so we will give a couple of tips on how to make this process easier.

Choose the moment and do not shilly-shally

Choose the right moment when all can focus on the topic and will not be distracted by events such as birthdays or weddings. Speak directly and without hesitation, stating your position clearly and right to the point.

Bear in mind that you may not get support at first

Sometimes it is more difficult for older people to accept the different nature and desires of the young without prejudice. Therefore, in the beginning, you may face condemnation and even negative comments, but this should not make you cut off contact with them. In time, they will accept the reality and understand that the most important thing is to support each other.

Tell your family first before telling everyone else

It has been proven that you will feel better if you first tell your family what is happening with you, and only then let the world know. There is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about, and it is perfectly normal to want to show off your preferences on social media. However, it is much better if your friends and family learn from you and not from a random Facebook photo.
