The picturesque city of Sausalito in Marin County, California, now can brag with a lesbian police chief. The appointment of Stacie Gregory to the position was effective on Jan. 7, the city website announced.
Her ascent makes Gregory the second woman and the first member of the LGBTQ community to become police chief in the town, which has a population of about 7000.

The release stated that the city manager Chris Zapata decided to waive a formal trial against Gregory, who had been with the department for 26 years, "based on her distinguished career in public security, her education and her performance as an acting chief until now, hampered by staff shortages and operational challenges."
"Chief Gregory has proven herself to be extremely capable. Her promotion is based on multiple factors, including her extensive experience with Sausalito residents, local businesses, the police department and all city departments", said Zapata.
Current chief John Rohrbacher retired in December 2023, according to an article in the Marin Independent Journal. It read that he went on medical leave in June 2022, which resulted in Gregory becoming acting chief.
The release also underlined that Chief Gregory's appointment was a positive reflection of a city that holds diversity, inclusion and belonging as core values."
Gregory herself said she is proud to continue serving. "I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as chief and will work hard to keep our community safe. I will continue to enhance the connections our department has made in the community and prioritize communication, transparency and respect."
