Barbecue enthusiasts in Vienna are disheartened by the recent decision of the city council to impose a temporary ban on lighting fires in public parks. This measure has been taken in response to the heightened risk of fires due to the severe droughts currently affecting the Austrian capital.

Summer activities in many cities often look similar, with residents gathering in parks for picnics, barbecues, and communal games of football or badminton. These occasions provide ideal opportunities to socialise and enjoy the sunshine. However, issues arise when city authorities restrict these activities due to the risk of fires.

Vienna City Council bans barbecues

This summer is the hottest on record, affecting people worldwide. The situation is particularly dire in California, where wildfires have already consumed tens of thousands of hectares of forest. Consequently, more cities are implementing measures to protect trees and shrubs from the extreme conditions.

As of 23 July 2024, Vienna has temporarily banned the use of fire in parks and urban forests. Due to the ongoing drought plaguing the city, communal barbecues and bonfires are now prohibited. In an ordinance, the Vienna City Council announced that smoking, using lights, and using city barbecue stands, which will be temporarily closed, are also banned. Barbecues in private gardens are still permitted, provided they are not in fire-risk areas.

Barbecue lovers to be fined

A steep penalty awaits barbecue enthusiasts who should defy Vienna's current ban. City authorities have announced that violators face fines of up to €7,300 for each offence. City Climate Councillor Juergen Chernohorszky elaborated in an interview: "Due to the exceptional drought, the risk of forest fires is extremely high. We urge residents to comply with this ban to ensure everyone's safety and prevent potential disasters."

The ban will be lifted once conditions in Vienna's parks and forests return to normal. However, this may not occur until autumn, with the anticipated rainfall and temperature drop.
