The 2024 Olympic Games look to be a very difficult time for Parisians. A new proposal by environmentalists calls for complete removal of cars from the French capital for six weeks of sporting competition.

According to the Sortir Ć  Paris guide, many Parisians are already planning to leave the capital for the duration of the Olympic Games to avoid the 15 million-strong crowds, as well as the difficulties of navigating the streets on foot and by public transport. One lane on the main ring road in Paris is going to be reserved for athletes, not to mention many other roads in the French capital.

Paris to be car-free during the Olympic Games?

The Olympic Games will take place from 26 July to 8 September 2024 in Paris. The Green Party members in the city council and environmentalists want the French capital to be completely car-free for this period. Instead of relying on them, locals and tourists are to get around by bicycles or on foot. Electric scooters are out of the question, as these have been banned and cannot be rented in Paris as of 1 September.

The Green Party suggested going even further and banning cars in all of Paris' neighbouring cities for the duration of the Olympics. During this time, public transport would be free. The Green Party members and environmentalists argue that this is not only a matter of common sense, but it's also beneficial as far as the environment and safety is concerned.

The aim is also to reduce CO2 emissions by half compared to the previous Games.

Toyota will provide mobility solutions at the Olympics

There's also another idea to battle the emissions. Toyota, as a mobility partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has launched its mobility concept for the Paris 2024 Games. The Japanese company wants to provide sustainable mobility solutions for athletes, officials, volunteers, accredited media as well as spectators.

Toyota's idea is to provide 250 personal electric vehicles. These are to come in seated and standing versions, with a maximum speed of 6 km/h. In addition to this, the company intends to provide 50 wheelchair e-pullers for people with disabilities, as well as 250 APM systems for public transport.
