Last Generation activists call for policy changes on flood embankments
The Last Generation activists have halted their street blockades in response to the severe flooding in southern Poland. The group is now assisting in efforts to combat the flooding while simultaneously urging policymakers to implement measures addressing the root causes of the climate crisis.
On 13 September, climate activists from Last Generation blocked the entrance to the Sejm, highlighting that the government's inadequate response to environmental issues is a crucial factor behind the rapidly escalating climate crisis. Reflecting on the simultaneous droughts and catastrophic rainfall, 20-year-old Tymek remarked: "I donāt want water to become our enemy."

Last Generation joins the fight against flooding
By Sunday, 15 September, Last Generation activists moved to the Opole Voivodeship, joining efforts to combat the floods. A group of young people from WrocÅaw first headed to GÅuchoÅazy, the most at-risk town. However, they arrived too lateāflood embankments had already been breached, and the city was overwhelmed by water. The activists then proceeded to Nysa, where they helped fill and stack sandbags.
A report from Nysa was later shared on Last Generationās profile on X, accompanied by the statement: "We are protesting for the government to address the causes of the climate crisis, not just its effects." Patryk, 22, emphasised: "The climate crisis is causing increasingly extreme weather events," adding, "Thatās why we are both here in Nysa and in the streets of Warsaw, sounding the alarm."
Despite the combined efforts of local services, residents, and activists, attempts to prevent further flooding in Nysa were ultimately unsuccessful. Rising waters submerged the city. As se.pl reported: "During the night, water breached the district hospital. Patients were evacuated using rafts and boats."
Are we the last generation that can stop climate catastrophe?
The name of the activist movement, Last Generation, stems from the declaration: "We are the last generation that can stop the worst effects of the climate catastrophe." On 14 September, with a touch of bitter irony, the activists highlighted statements from those who downplay climate change, writing: "At least we'll be able to grow oranges." Some accused the group of being tactless in the face of the human suffering in southern Poland.
Last Generation responded: "This is exactly what we've been warning about for six months. Climate collapse brings suffering and death. Itās not just about polar bearsāitās about real destruction, far more tangible than many are willing to acknowledge."
Last Generation halts blockades
On 16 September, Last Generation announced via Instagram that they were suspending their street blockades in Warsaw due to the ongoing flooding. The activists wrote: "In the last three days, many Polish men and women have lost their homes, belongings, and lives. As members of the Last Generation, we, along with all of Poland, are witnessing these tragedies with deep sorrow. Since Sunday, weāve been assisting with flood relief and organising groups to support those affected in the south of the country."
