Two Californian companies have been given permission to sell lab-grown meat. Also first company is working on its production here, in Poland.

On 21 June, the US Department of Agriculture gave the first two companies permission to release lab-grown meat on the market. The companies Upside and GOOD Meat will be the first to sell cell-based chicken meat. Hundreds more companies in the US are working hard to complete their production processes and enter the market as well.

We have already written about the fact that the commercial availability of lab-grown meat is imminent when Singapore become the first country in the world to allow it to be sold and when a ban on its production was being debated in Italy.

Why is cell-based meat a good idea?

A global reduction in the livestock farming is necessary, not only for humanitarian reasons. The meat industry generates as much as 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing the emissions and restoring forests around the world is essential to limiting the effects of the climate crisis.

As much as 77 per cent of the world's arable land is designated to the production of feed for slaughter animals - a tragedy for the afforestation of the planet. The meat we obtain this way provides only 20 per cent of the calories consumed globally.

Growing meat in laboratories will reduce felling trees for agricultural fields. It also uses incomparably less water for its production, which, with the increasing desertification of our planet, is not insignificant.

Fortunately there are also some companies in Poland that take that into considerations. As Money.pl reported on 26 June, LabFarm - the first Polish company working on the industrial production of cell-based meat - has started the next stage of preparations to enter the market. They plan to develop and release first products (cell-based chicken meat) by 2025.
