Originally used only by athletes, sun-protective clothing is now also purchased for walking the streets or going to the beach. These clothes are made from dense fabrics, such as polyester or nylon, and are chemically treated. The level of protection varies, similar to sunscreen.
In addition to swimwear for children and adults, there are also blouses, T-shirts and pants for everyday wear. UV-protective sun umbrellas have even appeared. Labels feature an indicator called UPF and a number between 15 and 50, which indicates the level of UV protection.
Liviu, a representative of a sports store: "Sales have increased significantly during this period. We have very good sales for both women's and men's products, but especially families coming to buy for their little ones, for babies".
Man: "They help; they are really recommended, especially for children. These are for seaside vacations, but they also work for mountain holidays. Sales have increased, and now we are restocking".
For those without UV-protective clothing, there are laundry detergents that can provide some degree of protection to regular clothes. On extremely hot days, recommended materials include cotton, silk, viscose, linen and hemp, which can also have antibacterial properties.
Larisa Dragna, fashion designer: "Everyone chooses based on how they feel in that particular fabric. These are natural fabrics that allow the skin to breathe, so you feel much cooler in the outfit you’re wearing, and it allows for longer wear during the day".
For those who spend many hours outside in the sun, cooling garments have been developed, such as a vest that is soaked in water for 3 minutes. It is made from a material that absorbs water inside while remaining dry on the outside.
The vest is generally used by motorcyclists but can also be used by those working in construction, agriculture or by couriers. It keeps the body cool for 6-8 hours, even when used in the sun.
Such a vest costs 400 lei. The market also offers other cooling items, such as towels, caps, bandanas and vests with built-in fans.
