The city of Amsterdam is going to introduce 3o kilometres per hour speed limit throughout the city as soon as December this year. Is this a good solution?

The Amsterdam authorities want safer and quieter traffic in the capital so a speed limit of 30 km/h will be introduced to more than 80% of the roads in the city. Buses and trams running on separated tracks will still be allowed to drive as fast as 50 km/h. However, they will have to slow down to 30 km/h in designated sections of the city.

Why is Amsterdam introducing a 30 km/h speed limit?

The new rules will not come into force until 8 December, but the city has already started installing almost 5,000 new traffic signs, as well as adjusting 170 traffic lights and take other "infrastructural measures". A campaign has also begun under the slogan: "We drive 30 for each other".

The new speed limit signs will initially be labelled with stickers stating that the new speed limit is effective from 8 December. The authorities forecast that the new speed limit should lead to a 20 to 30% reduction in serious accidents. Noise pollution will also decrease. The city will monitor these changes together with transport companies and emergency services, nltimes.nl reports.

Amsterdam has a population of over 820,000 people. According to deutchnews.nl, about one in four residents of the city owns a car. By comparison in Poland, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS) data from 2021/2022, there are 1.7 million vehicles (of which 1.43 million are cars) registered to 1.86 million residents of Warsaw.
