Chiaki Summer Ma worked in a corporation where she was in charge of marketing. She had her own desk, a computer and the opportunity to climb the career ladder. One day, she decided to quit and become… an influencer.

Chiaki Ma is only 23 years old, but has already worked in several positions. She graduated from university in 2021 and immediately started working for a corporation. She was in charge of marketing, but resigned after two years. The woman found that working in a corporation was repetitive.

There were different projects, but the employees did the same thing every day, as she told in an interview with Business Insider. Chiaki Ma says in the interview that she used to work in a so-called cubicle (a designated workspace with a desk and a computer, surrounded by partitions). At the time, she used to tell herself repeatedly that she does not want to work this way for more than two years.

She quit her job to become an influencer

In November 2022, the woman was fired from Twitter because of the threat of artificial intelligence taking over the industry. In the interview with Business Insider, she admitted that she was worried about the money, but at the same time realised that the dismissal was an opportunity for her.

Chiaki Ma said in the interview with Insider that she needed such a boost to finally be able to do what she loves. She added that others who have been laid off have also left the corporate lifestyle.

"Maybe it's time for me to just leave that field completely and pursue other opportunities that allow me to be creative because I'm a pretty creative person. As a naturally creative person, corporate kind of sucked the soul out of me," she said on her TickTok.

"It's not worth working where you don't want to be"

The woman talks about her own life on social media. In one video on TikTok, she mentioned pandemic times. Chiaki Ma stated that it's not worth working somewhere you don't want to be.

"If the pandemic has taught us anything it's that the essential workers — the workers we need so the public can survive — probably don't exist in a corporate building and they're probably not marketing coordinators," Ma said in her TikTok video

After quitting marketing, Chiaki Ma started working as a freelance content creator. In addition, she does some acting and has been moonlighting as a waitress since March 2023. Although she admits in the interview with Insider that her work-life balance looked better before, at the time she didn't feel like she was really living it.

"There are times where I feel like it's kind of hard in terms of finances and budgeting because I feel like I'm still transitioning out into a schedule and a routine that I'm not completely used to," she said. "But I would say I like it a little better because it feels like the work that I produce is just mine," she told the Insider

"Take a leap of faith and don't limit your possibilities," she advised others in the interview.

Would you do the same as Chiaki Ma did?
