Videos demonstrating a DIY method for removing body hair are going viral on TikTok. However, the "sugar waxing" trend has already caused harm, as a 17-year-old girl from Iowa learned. Her mother is now warning others about the potential dangers of this popular challenge.

TikTok, previously known as Musical.ly, is a social media platform that has rapidly gained immense popularity worldwide. The app allows users to create, share and view short videos. Initially, TikTok users mainly danced to popular songs. Currently, however, the platform boasts diverse content, including funny videos, commentary content, daily vlogs, trends, challenges, and much more. Videos published on TikTok spread quickly across the internet.

A new dangerous TikTok trend

Recently, a new, potentially harmful trend has emerged on the platform. Users publish videos depicting so-called "sugar waxing," which quickly gains viral reach on the app. However, the recipes for homemade sugar paste for hair removal may be dangerous for one's health and lead to severe body disfigurement, a fact that most users arenā€™t aware of.

Scarred for life

Natalie Renken is a mother from Iowa whose 17-year-old daughter was hospitalised due to participating in the sugar waxing trend. The teenager had tried to make one of the wax recipes, but unfortunately, the wax spilt onto her hand during the preparation. As a result, the girl suffered second-degree burns, and a large blister appeared on her thumb, which was bigger than her entire finger. It took about four weeks for the wound to heal finally.

The teenager's mother warns: "If your child comes to you and says ā€˜Iā€™m going to make sugar wax,ā€™ caution them against it. The ER doctor said that those videos do not give the disclaimer that when you reheat the wax, itā€™s uneven, and then when you stir it, thereā€™s a reaction between the hot and cold elements to this homemade wax."
